1953 Volvo TP21 "Sugga" Resto Mod

The TP 21 was a limited production, 4-wheel drive vehicle designed for the Swedish military as a radio command vehicle, only 720 were built from 1953 to 1958. They are exceedingly rare in the USA. This one was imported in 2008.

The original body/cab section of the “Sugga” is a repurposed Volvo PV800 series taxicab, while hood, fenders and grill were given a more flat, squared off utility look in keeping with military usage.

A 223ci inline-6 cylinder, side-valve engine producing a scant 90bhp at 3600RPM and 159 foot-pounds of torque, originally powered the Sugga, hardly a worthy off-road machine by today’s standards. With a recommended top speed of about 50mph the original Sugga is not practical transportation on modern roads.

This highly modified Sugga sits on a 2008 Dodge Ram 4x4 pickup and sports a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel inline six, generating 350 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. Modern amenities include power steering, power brakes, power windows, Air Conditioning and Porsche Cayenne seating.

Originally suspended by leaf springs front and rear this resto mod Sugga now sits on coil over springs in the front and custom leaf springs in the rear.

Volvo Sugga restoration

This Sugga underwent a 2 year, frame off rotisserie restoration here in our Rutland, MA shop. The Sugga body and Dodge frame were soda blasted, etched, primed and painted British Racing Green. The frame and body required extensive fabrication to mate the much narrower Sugga body to the Dodge truck drivetrain and frame.
